I don't think there are words enough to articulate how grateful I am for so much of my life.
Suffice it to say: Between friends and family, My Lovely Wife and our tiny kid on the way, and the best job in the world, I am rolling in stuff to be thankful for today.
PS We are baby-stranded in Los Angeles, so My Lovely Wife's sister, Meg D., has made the long trek to join us. We are very happy and excited to get to be with family today. Even though all three of us will miss the dressing of the Meat Turkey back home.
...since I'm trying to get back to writing here after a long hiatus, there have been some events I haven't had the chance to share with you. Milestones I've crossed. Traditions I've celebrated.
Art I've helped to create.
Feast your eyes on The Meat Turkey.
A couple years ago, The Lovely Virginia's family began the tradition of The Meat Tree at Christmas: A Summer Sausage, lovingly poked with artfully placed beefsticks, held in place by weight-bearing toothpicks. It's simultaneously beautiful and overwhelming.
Anyway, we decided this year that we couldn't wait until Christmas to delve once more into the flesh arts, so we dreamed up a Thanksgiving Meat Turkey. One again, a Summer Sausage provides stability, and beefsticks make an appearance as legs, neck and head... But the stroke of genius was the use of beef jerky (both teriyaki and au natural) for the feathers, feet and gobbler.
What brings father and daughter together like the sculpting of the annual Meat Turkey?
