It means that the Mad Men writer's room will open on Monday! And that I'll be employed again!
I know! It's great news. The only sad part is that it means I'll be gone a little more often. I won't get to be with you all day long anymore.
I know. That part makes me a little sad, too.
Well, the producers broke off the negotiations with the WGA today.
They say they will return to the table when they receive a letter from the WGA stating that it will retract its demands.
The WGA has stated that they remain open to further negotiation, but that they will not simply retract their demands.
Nor should they.
Ever.
I will take a class called "Speaker Installing and Making It Your Career" before I support another crappy deal for artists.
Here we go: Round Two.
TJ asked if I was busy with the baby.
Not yet. She is taking her full time. She's due on the 14th, and it looks like she's planning to ride it out.
We got to see some 2D pictures of her yesterday. She has some CHEEKS.
So, so cute. So, so excited!
We are planning to get a Christmas tree. Tomorrow, I think.
I am going to Chad's to play nerdy board games today. I am very, very excited. Because, you see, I like nerdy board games.
No news here on the strike. No idea when it will end. Negotiations are continuing today, but I am not entirely optimistic that the producers are going to show any flexibility in their heretofore ridiculous proposal. You can help jog the producers' awareness by sending them a box of pencils. Only costs a buck. And feel free to type "Mad Men" in the little box about which show you're supporting. Info below.
Are we making sense? I hope so.
Get with it. It's annoying.
Even my daughter, who's not even born yet, thinks you're being lame.
Stop stealing from writers. There are 12,000 of them. There are a lot more of you.
45% of the WGA didn't even work last year. They existed on other jobs or residuals from past work.
My Lovely Wife and I have had times where we lived off of residuals. We know what it's like.
Union artists need residuals. Stop being money grubbing a-holes.
Besides, they only get paid when you get paid. How is it even an issue? If you're making zero dollars off of the internet (coughbullshitcough), then pay them 2.5% of zero dollars. Let them feel like they've won.
Oh, wait... You are making money off of their work on the internet? Then pay them for it. You are not creating the work, you are selling it. And for that, you get almost all of the money. Let them have their little nugget for CREATING THE THING YOU MAKE MONEY OFF OF, and get people back to work.
Makes no sense to me.
Here's me and some of my co-workers on the picket line Wednesday:
In case that's something you're curious about, watch this.
Also, read this excellent Entertainment Weekly piece:
Why The Writers Are Right, by Mark Harris
Also, visit UnitedHollywood.com for more information from the striking writers themselves.
And then write a letter to the head of the studio producing your favorite shows, explaining why they need to get back to the table with a fair deal for writers.
Explain the Producers' position on this. I'm begging you. Because it makes absolutely zero sense to me.
We're behind you, WGA.
