No doubt some of you recall the beauty of this Thanksgiving's Meat Turkey.
In celebration of Christmas, my lovely wife's family decided to step it up a notch. We've spent the last hour or so crafting what I believe to be a beautiful and complex homage to the holiday. I present you with:
The Meativity.
(More photos available here and here. Apparently, my crappy cellphone camera is not the only machine that can capture photos of magical artistic creations.)
Merry Christmas, friends!
Show us a victory.

How odd that this would be the request for today.
My lovely wife decided to bake some lovely treats for a small gathering we're hosting to celebrate the release of The Devil Wears Prada on DVD. (did you buy yours yet?) One of the lovely treats she decided to make is Corn Flake Wreaths. And you know how they have those little red hots on 'em? The "berries" that are hard enough to crack your teeth? Well, I was given the assignment of "picking some up" while I was out today.
Let me say this: NYC is a place where you can do almost anything. If you want to walk in the woods, you can. If you want to get some rare cigar or something, you can. If you want to see where George Washington bade farewell to his troops after the Revolutionary War, you can.
You cannot, however, find these stupid red hots.
I kid you not: I spent a total of three hours today looking for them.
Three.
Hours.
After hour one, it was truly a mission. I was not going to stop until I found them. Thank goodness I'm unemployed.
If you're sent on a similar mission in this suck town, please let me be your martyr and just head straight to the Food Emporium in Union Square. They're at the back of the shelf behind the Assorted Fruit Flavored Decors under the icing.
And I reign victorious.
...since I'm trying to get back to writing here after a long hiatus, there have been some events I haven't had the chance to share with you. Milestones I've crossed. Traditions I've celebrated.
Art I've helped to create.
Feast your eyes on The Meat Turkey.
A couple years ago, The Lovely Virginia's family began the tradition of The Meat Tree at Christmas: A Summer Sausage, lovingly poked with artfully placed beefsticks, held in place by weight-bearing toothpicks. It's simultaneously beautiful and overwhelming.
Anyway, we decided this year that we couldn't wait until Christmas to delve once more into the flesh arts, so we dreamed up a Thanksgiving Meat Turkey. One again, a Summer Sausage provides stability, and beefsticks make an appearance as legs, neck and head... But the stroke of genius was the use of beef jerky (both teriyaki and au natural) for the feathers, feet and gobbler.
What brings father and daughter together like the sculpting of the annual Meat Turkey?
Remember when I was telling you all about the things NYC is missing?
Well, it's remedied number one on that list.
Guess where in Brooklyn I'll be for the Browns game tomorrow night, wearing my Browns Santa hat. If you guessed the BW3 in the above photo, you were correct. We also would have accepted, "the same place you were last night at 5pm EST, when the doors opened for the first time."
Now we just need DQ, Caribou, Famous Dave's and Nighttown East. Shouldn't be long now.
I also chose to start Trent Green instead of Michael Vick in my fantasy league yesterday. Oops. Trent got a little sleepy for a while there. Yikes.
Oh, and I came home from watching the game at a bar and made some homemade jalapeno poppers. Idea: Good. Execution: Bad. Apparently, I am not very good at seeding jalapenos when I have had a few (read: a lot of) beers. Oh, the searing pain on my hands/in my mouth/on my face.
It was a banner day all around.
Good news: This is my penultimate day of temping for a little while. Now I do the Little Dance Of Joy.
By the way, my brother was in town for the weekend. I think he had a good time, and that makes me happy.
(Hey, does anyone know how to make a tilde on here? "Jalapeno" looks stupid without the tilde.)
Remember when I named five food-things I missed about other places in which I've lived?
Well, when I was in Cleveland, I had the opportunity to head to Nighttown for the Grille & Greens. First time in two years. Just as freaking incredible as it ever was.
Then, upon my return, I found a little care package from some of my in-laws. The package contained:
- 1 bottle of Buffalo Wild Wings Hot Sauce
- 1 bottle of Famous Dave's Devil Spit BBQ Sauce
- 1 bag of Caribou Coffee
How awesome is that?
It's not as if Joe and Katie have anything else going on, what with the one-month-old baby and all.
Thanks again, guys. Can't wait to see you this weekend and meet my niece!
Which niece, you ask? This one:
Oh, and how am I going to see them all this weekend? I'm heading to Minnesota (I'm a globetrotter) for my high school reunion.
I'm old.
Oh, and I think they happen to have Dairy Queen in Minnesota, thereby completing my food-missed-odyssey.
Things are looking up.
I may not be much of a cook, but I can sometimes heat things up on a grill or grill pan, and they can sometimes turn out okay.
For some reason, Fresh Direct (where we usually get our groceries) was giving away free shrimp skewers this week. So I thought it might be fun to grill them on the grill pan I got for Christmas from my brand-new in-laws.
Um, apparently, I'm awesome at grilling shrimp. And my wife makes awesome corn-off-the-cob to go with it.
We're domestic.
