1. I am going to tonight's American Idol. My emotions regarding this range from very excited to very nervous for the loss of a certain kind of virginity.
2. Bea does this now, with no goading or teaching by me. Or The Lovely Virginia. She did it all by herself. I think it's because we watched Parenthood while she was cooking.
At least it's not Barney.
Anyway, she asks for Elmo constantly, either by name, or by the first two notes of his theme song on Sesame Street.
Pretty scary.
In other Elmo news, my friend Jed Resnik, whose blog I recommended to you on July 20, 2006 (and may be moving to a new spot soon), posted this fantastic video of Ricky Gervais with Elmo. It made me very, very happy.
What single event changed your view of the world for the better or for the worse?

There have been a few, obviously, but I think the biggest personal change has come from Bea's birth. And just having her around.
I think about stuff... differently.
I spent the weekend in my home state of Minnesota.
Boy, I like it there. Not to mention a lot of the people there.
Sigh. Someday.
Backstage did an interview with me. It's here. My parents, I'd guess, don't *love* my talking about failing so much of high school.
Oopsie. Sorry, guys.
And don't tell Bea.
Until she's got her fifteen degrees.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, The Honorable Reverend Doctor Captain Beatrice Sommer, M.A., R.N., Ph. D., Ed.D., Psy.D., Th.D, J.D."
That sounds about right.
So, a week ago today, The Lovely Virginia and I packed up The Bean and embarked on a family trip to The Big Apple.
Wednesday night, we stayed in Midtown. It was noisy and wonderful. Drunkle PJ and I went to a fancy-shmancy Hugo Boss event. Here's us before we left.
We had most of the day to cart Bea around town (mostly to Beard Papa's), and then we headed to a fancy Mad Men soiree.
Then came Saturday.
Boy, oh boy. Saturday.
I have been a fan of SNL since I was about, um, born. And I have been very impressed with this season so far, due in no small part to my friend Bobby Moynihan.
So attending the show as an audience member was, to put it succinctly, amazing.
Throw in that a friend and co-worker was hosting, which made it a thousand times better.
Put on top of that two friends and co-workers guest-starring, and my head started to get a little warm.
Oh, and as we sat down, we noticed a clear rendition of the Sterling Cooper set directly in front of us.
Uh-oh.
Once you realize that your-friend-the-SNL-cast-member is playing YOU in a sketch... Well, that's about when your brain starts to melt and seep out your EARS.
No way to put it into words, except to say that other than my wedding night, this was easily the best night of my life.
I am not exaggerating.
It was the culmination of about fifty dreams at once.
Un-f'ing-believable.
Oh, and then on Sunday, we took Bea to the dog run in Union Square Park. She apparently loves the crap outta puppies. You'll notice her puppy hat.
Many thanks to Meg and Kris for babysitting. Youse guys made it all work.
And it was fun.
It's time for pictures!
First, a series I should have posted a while ago, but didn't. These are from the Entertainment Weekly Pre-Emmy Party. We had fun.
Last night, Michael and I went to a spooooooooky haunted house, because it was cold and windy and October.
At the haunted house, they took two pictures of you as you came in. The first one was all nice and gentle.
And your last picture is of a pumpkin patch. Can you guess which pumpkin we took home with us?
Pictures are fun!
...how much I love this kid.
The Lovely Virginia called me at work yesterday to tell me that Bea had all of a sudden started saying, "la, la, la." Which is a major step from her usual straight, open mouthed yell.
I know this is not a big deal, and most babies do it, but it was the big news in the Sommer home yesterday.
Here's video. You may catch a few "ba"s and "da"s, too.
Because Bea, all of a sudden, is crazy for consonants.
Babies are awesome.
Bea has a flat head.
Not totally flat, but there's a big, flat spot back and to the right.
Back and to the right.
It looks like this, but not as severe:
Anyway, her head's flat.
So last week, we took her in to get fitted for a pretty little helmet which will help her head grow into a nice, round shape. You know, so that when she makes her hair into a ponytail someday, it's not creepy-crooked.
Or when she shaves her head. Or whatever she ever chooses to do. It's her head; we just want to round it out for her.
So, for the next 3-5 months, she will be in a helmet. She looks like a pink Spaceball.
Also, there is a large opening on top of the helmet. I discovered that I can fit stacking cups into the hole perfectly.
Let the fun begin.
* - The Lovely Virginia and I played The Etymology Game on the way home from the doc, and came to the conclusion that 'torticullus' probably literally means 'flexibility cut,' sharing the same roots as 'contortion' and 'cull.' We are nerds.
